The link is dead. Getting another one is free.

The download link in a ChatGPT export email expires 24 hours after it is sent. That is the whole rule. If the email arrived overnight and you opened it the following evening, it was already dead by the time you saw it.

The short window is deliberate. That link points at a file containing every conversation on your account, and it is sitting in an inbox — which is forwarded, synced to several devices, and occasionally breached. A permanent link to your complete chat history is a liability, so it is not permanent.

Request a fresh export the same way you requested the first: Settings → Data controls → Export data, on the web. OpenAI also operates a Privacy Portal that can be used to make the request.

There is no fee and no published lifetime limit on how many exports you may request. What you generally cannot do is have two running at once — if a request is still processing, ChatGPT will usually tell you an export has already been requested rather than starting a second one. Wait for the first to land.

While a link is live, anyone holding it can download the archive. It is not tied to your logged-in session, so forwarding the email to a colleague, a support agent, or your other address hands over every conversation on the account.

If you need to get the archive onto another machine, download it first and move the file yourself.

It is worth knowing what the ZIP holds, because the second surprise usually follows the first.

Inside is conversations.json: every message on your account, nested inside a tree of UUID keys, with branch pointers from every prompt you ever edited and timestamps that are sometimes simply absent. There is also a chat.html viewer, which opens as one enormous unnavigable page and cannot be imported anywhere.

The data is genuinely all there. It is just not in a shape built for a person — so people who finally get past the expired link often conclude the export is broken. It is not. It needs converting.

The one habit that fixes this permanently: download the ZIP the moment the email arrives, before doing anything else with it. The 24-hour clock is on the link, not on the file. Once the ZIP is on your disk it is yours indefinitely — it keeps working after the link dies, after you change plan, and after the account is closed.
