Your export has not arrived. Here is why.

You requested the export, the confirmation said it would be sent, and nothing has come. In nearly every case it is one of five things, and four of them you can check in a minute.

First: how long is normal

Most exports arrive in a few minutes to a couple of hours. OpenAI's stated ceiling is 7 days, which is genuinely rare and mostly affects very large accounts.

If it has been under two hours, nothing is wrong yet. Under 24 hours is still well inside normal. Past that, work through the list.

1. It went to a different inbox

The export is sent to the email on the OpenAI account, which is not always the one you think. If you signed up with Google, Microsoft, or Apple, it goes to that address — including an Apple private relay address if you used Hide My Email. Phone-only accounts receive the link by SMS instead.

Check the account email under Settings, then search that mailbox for openai. OpenAI currently documents the sender as noreply@tm.openai.com.

2. It is in spam

An automated email with a download link is exactly what spam filters distrust. Search your spam and promotions folders for openai rather than scrolling — the subject line is not memorable.

3. The link already expired

The download link expires 24 hours after it is sent. If the email arrived overnight and you opened it the next evening, the link is dead and the page will say so.

Request a new export through Settings or the Privacy Portal. There is no cost.

4. The request was not submitted

On the web, the export lives under Settings → Data controls → Export data. If the confirmation dialog never appeared, the request may not have been submitted. Try again from a browser. Some mobile versions can also start an export, but their layout differs and may hand the process to the web.

5. Your account is genuinely large

Thousands of conversations with many uploaded images take real time to package. If you are a heavy user of several years, sitting in the multi-hour range is expected rather than broken.

If it has been more than 7 days

Submit a new export request or use OpenAI's Privacy Portal. If another request is still processing, ChatGPT may tell you that an export has already been requested; wait for that request to finish before submitting another.

When it does arrive

The ZIP will contain conversations.json, which is not readable by design — every message nested in a tree of UUIDs. Drop the ZIP here and it becomes Markdown, an Obsidian vault, HTML, or PDF, in your browser, without uploading anything.

One practical note: download it as soon as the message lands, because of the 24-hour window. Convert it afterwards, at your leisure.

How long should the ChatGPT export take?
Minutes to a few hours typically; 7 days is the documented outside case.
Can I request another export while one is pending?
Usually not. OpenAI says to wait for the existing request to finish; ChatGPT may report that an export has already been requested. If nothing arrives after 7 days, submit a new request or use the Privacy Portal.
Is there a limit on export requests?
OpenAI publishes no numeric lifetime limit or fee, but it does prevent or discourage duplicate requests while one is still processing.
Why is there no download button in the app?
The archive is delivered by email, or by SMS for a phone-only account, through a link that expires after 24 hours.
